Background
The OBX Wave Volleyball Club was founded in November 2016 for the 2017 Carolina Region (CR) competition season. We started that year with 10 girls (aged 12-15) on one U15 team. This season will be our largest with 7 teams: 18U, 16U, 15U, two 14U, 12U and a developmental 11/12U. 2023-2024 will be our eighth year providing an affordable club volleyball experience for female junior volleyball players in the Outer Banks area.

Our Mission
It is the Mission of the OBX Wave Volleyball Club to provide a positive, competitive youth volleyball experience for player, parent and coach. We emphasize long-term player development of physical, emotional and social skills. While winning is an absolute priority in club volleyball, winning will not be placed above good sportsmanship (defined as respecting rules and procedures set forth below, teammates, coaches, officials, opponents and one’s self). It is our goal to create an environment that will benefit the individual as well as the team. You have joined a competitive volleyball program. Competitive team athletics by its very nature creates situations where everyone may not be happy all the time. Team success is intimately linked to individual success. Each player will fill a necessary role on the team. Although some rolls are larger than others, none are insignificant to the overall success of the team. Coaches will discuss and define each role with the individual. Players are encouraged to use practices as an avenue for further developing their skills and expanding their role on the team. Players and parents must understand that the only desire of the coach is to assist the team in reaching its full potential. We can only achieve this by encouraging, acknowledging and supporting each other’s efforts in practice, scrimmages and tournaments.

There is teaching and coaching, and if you have a choice, you’d rather be a better teacher than a coach.– Hugh McCutcheon – former head coach U.S. Women’s and Men’s National Teams

AMANDA FINCHEM

Club Director

Amanda Finchem moved to the Outer Banks in 1995 after graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in American Studies. She and her husband, Robert, spent 6 years on Hatteras Island before relocating to the Northern beaches. Together they run Coastland Building Inspections, a successful home inspection business. Amanda has been actively involved in the community, from creating several support groups for pregnant and postpartum women to volunteering at local schools for her two children. After Amanda's daughter fell in love with volleyball during her 7th grade year at First Flight Middle School, Amanda helped found OBX Wave Volleyball Club in 2016.  She was mentored by Kelly Ballard, the director of Allegheny Elite, the former travel club on the Outer Banks. Amanda became Club Director in 2017 and has grown the club with developmental teams, regional teams, and a National team in 2021. She thrives on building a successful volleyball club in our rural community.  Creating OBX Wave has created a space for Outer Banks girls to improve their skills, learn to be a part of a team, and enjoy playing volleyball.
